Shelley's formal education took place at The Ohio State University (MA Photography) and Indiana University (BFA Printmaking) during the 1970s. During those years she worked as an artist, researcher and curator. She has taught photography, history of photography and bookbinding workshops at universities, preparatory schools and adult education programs. For several years Shelley worked as a graphic designer and continued to study independently and created art in various media including drawing, painting and collage. Eventually discovering fabric, she became fascinated with layering images on cloth by screenprinting, painting and drawing with thickened dyes, bleaching agents and acrylic paints. Shelley learned fabric dyeing from four of the best teachers: Sue Benner, Jane Dunnewold, Kerr Grabowski and Els Van Baarle.

We’ll start with a copy machine and drawings, photographs, objects and ideas and finish with at least five thermofax screens and as much printed fabric as you can create. DESCRIPTION
This workshop is designed to expand the use of the thermofax screen as a tool. Experimenting with the copy machine (on-site), participants will create a wide variety of images to generate discoveries about formal issues including lines, marks, texture, imagery and scale. Participants will each make at least five thermofax screens to use in their work. In addition to thickened dyes, fabric paint, discharge, resists, metal leaf, and simple registration techniques will be demonstrated and available. With these screens, students will investigate the combination of the planned screened image with the spontaneity of a monoprinted surface.
