  16. Pins or other system (plastic tags, basting spray) for holding the three layers of the quilt together ready for machine quilting.

Iron, ironing board, freezer paper, compass, flexible (bendy) ruler are optional extras.

Materials:

  1. Assortment of fabrics to include light, medium and dark. These can be solids, near solid or with subtle prints, but should have tonal contrast. Bold prints can work but please be aware that they may ‘confuse’ the sewn piecing lines, and that detailed machine quilting may not show up to the best advantage on them. Most of my work uses near solids for these reasons. Bring fabrics of fat quarter size and bigger. Include a few one and two yard pieces. You will not have time to make a large quilt so do not need masses of fabric - but you will want to have choices!

  2. 100% cotton batting. Crib size (45” x 60”) should be plenty for your project.

  3. Fabric for the quilt back.

  4. Trapunto batting. Scraps of 80/20 cotton/polyester batting or wool batting.

  5. Two or three pale coloured quilt sandwiches of fat quarter size with 100% cotton batting. These are for practice samples

  6. A reel of water soluble thread for trapunto.

  7. Fine thread for piecing. I prefer 50/2 cotton thread for this.

  8. Your choice of threads for free-motion machine quilting. I use 40-weight rayon and polyester threads for my free-motion work.

Materials fee covers trapunto yarn, trapunto muslin.
