JEAN WILLIAMS CACICEDO

Jean Williams Cacicedo received a BFA in Sculpture from the Pratt Institute, New York. Based in Berkeley, Jean has been a teacher, curator, lecturer and visiting artist in many schools including CCA Oakland; Penland School, North Carolina; Split Rock Arts Program, University of Minnesota; Shakerag Workshops, Tennessee; RMIT Melbourne, Australia; and Hong Kong Polytechnic, China.

Cacicedo was a prime innovator in the Wearable Art Movement of the 1970s. For over three decades she has worked both on and off the body, incorporating a special process she developed for wool fabrics as well as works on paper. Known for her “signature coats”, her pieced and sewn, slashed, felted and dyed constructions have been exhibited throughout Western Europe, Japan and the United States. In 2000, a 30-year retrospective of her work was featured at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, San Francisco, California. Her work can be found in the permanent  collections of the de Young Museum in San Francisco, Oakland Museum of California, and Museum of Art and Design, NYC.

DESCRIPTION
The potential of nature to inspire sets the stage for this workshop; the natural world around us and also the nature of how various types of fabrics can be transformed through manipulation. Observations from nature and personal expression will guide our choices for design as we develop ways of adapting ideas for both the surface and structure of fabrics. Drawing and sketching in our journal, along with sample making will be our focus as we explore a wide range of methods and processes for creating textured cloth. Techniques include piecing and shrinking fabrics with disparate shrink ratios, felting, folding, fraying, slashing, embroidery and more. A final 2D or 3D project of choice will be made from one or more of the techniques created in our sample making.

This workshop will provide a rich engagement into the creative design process with critiques, conversations and lots of slides to view.

Basic intermediate sewing skills and a sewing machine are required.
