Visions and Revisions: a Master Class for Dyers

Carol Soderlund | October 1-5, 2012

DESCRIPTION
Join Carol Soderlund for this retreat of focussed work and renewal. If you find yourself dreaming of a chance to develop a your dyeing or surface design work in a focussed and positive atmosphere with knowledgeable advice and feedback readily available, this is your opportunity. Class size will be kept small to enable each student to have a large table for workspace, with choice of hard surface or padded print surface. Discussions will range from visions and goals, process and product, to practical aspects of workflow in a studio practice. Carol act as facilitator, guide, and catalyst, and will share number of readings to stimulate and inspire.

We will explore goals ahead of class via email to maximize productivity and focus during the week. Participants move forward on a body of work, continuing on with work in progress, and/or beginning new pieces, while clarifying understanding of processes and techniques of dyeing and surface design. The curriculum will be very flexible, with processes and techniques demonstrated as needed to move work forward. Techniques may include, but are not limited to, low water dyeing, discharge, screen techniques with silkscreens and thermofax screens, and water soluble resists. Carol will meet with each artist throughout the week, fostering individual and group discussions as needs evolve.

You will be challenged to find your personal path, with guidance, and make work that expresses your vision. We will willingly enter that strange territory, teetering between spontaneity and intention, where we respond to the work as it happens.

SUPPLY LIST (Please label your own supplies)

• Fabric:
Fabric choice will be very dependent on what you would like to accomplish. All fibers such as cotton, linen, rayon, hemp, and silk are all dyed with Procion MX dyes. For cotton, PFD (Prepared For Dyeing) is highly recommended. All fabrics should be scoured before the workshop in hot water with soda ash and synthrapol. Also consider bringing previously dyed fabrics that need additional layers of discharge and/or dye.

• General supplies:
• Rubber gloves, both heavier dishwashing kind, and the thin kind, such as you would find at a pharmacy
• For those who plan to do discharge work: a half-mask respirator fitted with an acid-gas cartridge
• Box of ball-headed or T pins
• Rotary mat 12” x 12” or larger, rotary cutter, and rotary ruler around 6”x12”
• Black Sharpie
• Stapler
• Masking tape
• Double stick tape (Scotch Doubled-Sided Tape in yellow plaid dispenser)
• 20+ clear sheet protectors
• 1 plastic drop cloth, at least 2 mil in thickness
• Pair of scissors, suitable for paper and fabric
• Notebook for notetaking
• Pen and pencil
• Apron or old clothing
• iPod and headphones if you like to work to music
• Color wheel (optional - you might like one as reference if you have one)

Supplies will vary depending on each individual’s plans. Here are some general considerations:

If you are doing thickened dye work, I recommend you bring:
• One or more silkscreens
• Thermofax screens (if you would like Carol to prepare some for you from your imagery, > email her in advance of class)
• Scraping tools, such as a squeegee, bondo spreader, and scraper such as an old hotel key for use with the screens
• Your favorite mark-making tools, including brushes and foam rollers
• Two dropcloths: For placing under print work, please bring dropcloths that are sturdy, such as cotton twill or denim. Please pre-wash and shrink your dropcloths to size; the largest tables measure 9’ x 4’ so if you allow for this size, you’ll be fine.

For immersion work, I recommend you bring:
• buckets or other containers to dye in (the dye studio has many plastic cottage cheese and yogurt containers. There is also a dollar store nearby.)

For discharge work, I recommend you bring:
• A well-fitting respirator with the appropriate acid gas/organic vapors cartridge.
• If you are driving, a good steam iron would be helpful.
• Discharge work will take place outside.

If you are driving, not flying, bring:
• 2 or 3 buckets, any size from one to 3 gallons

MATERIALS FEE PROVIDES:
• Handouts
• Procion MX dyes in pure yellows, reds, and blues, plus additional pure hues and black
• Auxiliary chemicals such as soda ash, urea, print paste, synthrapol
• Discharge chemicals
• Tools for student use
